Denise's story:
I've always had a love of sport as I grew up competing in Sports Acrobatics from the age of 8 which lead on to me coaching in my gymnastics club and then onto working in summer camps in my local community centre.
Finishing my Leaving Cert like most teenagers gives the scary thought of where do I want to go with my career but I had two options in mind: Sport and Art so needless to say I went with option 1!
I completed a 2 year course in Sports & Leisure Management in Colaiste Ide Finglas and went straight into teaching Fitness and Gym Instruction.
In 2003 everything changed when I was introduced to Pilates, I trained and qualified with the National Training Centre Pilates Matwork. Pilates showed me so much more than exercise and movement it showed me that people could really benefit from this amazing form of exercise to rehabilitate themselves and use it as a preventative measure.
I wanted to learn so much more so I completed numerous workshops for example, Pilates Pre & Post Natal, Pilates for Breast Cancer, Pilates using equipment, Pilates for kids, Total Barre - the list goes on! I also trained with STOTT PILATES and have continued to teach this Pilates technique since.
The large commercial gym scene as much as it helped me to grow and learn it began to feel restricted and confined. I had so many ideas of my own and could see that the need for individual attention in classes outweighed the need to have huge numbers attending but unfortunately it wasn't to happen so something had to change.
2008 was another highlight in my career when I signed up for a FETAC Start your Own Business course in my local Enterprise Centre and 2 months after I completed it I was handed the keys to my studio "Resolute". The name was very important to me as it means determination and with determination we can achieve anything we set our hearts to!
Hearts - the Heart became a big part of 2008 too. During my time working in gyms I encountered many people coming to me with heart conditions and some coming from hospitals after going through a Cardiac Rehab programme and with both of my parents with heart conditions I wanted to learn more about specific exercise programmes for heart patients. I researched this and found the BACPR Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation course. Travelling back & forth to Leeds Metropolitan University I qualified in 2009. Tallaght Hospital, St. James Hospital & local Gps have since referred patients to my community based programme.
Jumping ahead to the present day 19 years since starting my fitness journey I am very much all about using exercise as a form of rehabilitation and plan to further my training in this area. Making exercise more inclusive to all is something I am passionate about and have completed the CARA Disability Inclusion Training.
I am really hoping to make the first ever Got Your Back Ireland 2018 national fundraiser the huge success it can be and grow bigger each year, joining forces with fellow instructors all around the country and making the main event the first fully inclusive Pilates & Wellness for EVERY BODY.
